Urban Hanlon Broughton
(1857-1929)

Born in Worcester on 12 April 1857, Urban Hanlon Broughton studied engineering at the University of London under the civil engineers Law and Thomas. On leaving university he worked on a variety of projects including the railway, drainage systems and dock works.

In 1887 he moved to America where he became engaged in a variety of activities, including engineering, manufacturing, mining and the American railways. Whilst in America, he met and married the New York heiress, Cara Leland. They had two sons, Urban Huttleston Rogers, born August 1896, and Henry Rogers born January 1900.

The family returned to England in 1912 and in 1915 Urban Hanlon was elected Conservative MP for Preston. In 1918 the family moved to Park Close in Englefield Green, Surrey, near to the meadows at Runnymede. Urban Hanlon Broughton died suddenly in January 1929, shortly before he was due to be elevated to the peerage. He was 71 years old.
