The Personification of Winter

David Jordan - © NT

The Winter Dell is named after the statue that stands at the western end of the walk, it is a stone figure said to personify winter, commissioned by Lord Fairhaven.

The walk has been planted with evergreens such as Box, Yew (yellow fruited), and Ivy to give a shady, cool area even on the warmest day. The pathway is also known as Church Walk, possibly due to it being the route taken from the house to the church every Sunday.
