Back to the start of the tour 9 - The Cyclamen PathBack to The Cyclamen Path

The Quarry Pool and Lime Avenue

As you pass the Cyclamen, the path opens into a lawn area with, on your right a double Lime Avenue planted in 1937. The trees are Tilia europaea 'Pallida' and were planted to commemorate the coronation of George 6. The centre rows of trees are underplanted with scilla and chionodoxa, which give pools of blue flowers in spring.

To your left is the Quarry Pool. It is a flooded pit approximately 7 metres deep which was previously quarried for coprolite, fossilised dinosaur dung, highly valued as a fertiliser during the nineteenth century.
