Back to the start of the tour 18 - The Formal GardenBack to the Formal Garden

The Dell

Leave the Formal garden and travel back along the gravelled path. Take the right hand fork, which will lead you to the South glade. Once on the grass, turn right again and follow the Yew hedge. This is the back of the Formal Garden. To your left is a long, deep, depression in the ground. This is part of the earthworks that were the series of fishponds used by the monks as a source of fresh food during the time prior to 1535, and the dissolution of the monasteries.

The Dell now houses a collection of Philadelphus for scent and flowers during the summer, and a collection of Snowdrops for the winter.
