The Dahlia Garden

The Dahlia Garden was created in 1952; it is a curved border, designed so that the viewer cannot see the whole layout from either end. The Dahlias are planted out in early June on the point of flowering, and continue to do so until the first hard frost. The plants are derived from cuttings taken during March and April, as they flower much earlier and with greater vigour than plants raised from tubers.

The garden is surrounded by a tall clipped Beech hedge, which frames a nineteenth century bronze copy of the Capitoline Faun, on a plinth inscribed 'ANNUS MIRABILIS' and dated 1945 to celebrate the end of the second world war.

Walk past this statue, turning right as you do. You are now on the Riverside Walk.
