The Cross Avenue

This avenue was planted at the same time as the Coronation Avenue, with the same Horse Chestnuts, as part of the commemorative planting in 1937, for the coronation of George 6.

At the north end it closed by a planting of a circle of Silver Birch, and at the other end by a circle of Dawyck's Beech, an upright form.

In summer this avenue has an almost cathedral like feel as the boughs sweep upwards to form a vaulted ceiling to a dark green canopy, an effect heightened by the 'candles' of flowers.
