The dell that contains the Bishop's Walk was originally a watercourse that led water away from the Abbey to the river.
For many years it was used as a rubbish area taking fallen leaves, prunings etc. from the gardeners work.
Once cleared, it became the obvious site for those shade-loving plants such as Martagon lilies, Cyclamen, Ferns and Snowdrops.
The walk is named after the three nineteenth century figures of the Virgin Mary, holding a lily, with a pair of bishops, one on either side standing opposite to the entrance to the Spring Garden.
The front drive or the Arboretum can be accessed from either end of the Bishop's Walk.
